More national news coverage this month on maternal health issues and the innovators that are addressing the needs of pregnant and postpartum women.

The Wall Street Journal published "Digital-Health Startups Take Aim at Maternal-Health Crisis," featuring comments from Babyscripts CEO Anish Sebastian and clinical champions Dr. Kathryn Marko of GW-MFA and Dr. Kathaleen Barker of Baystate Health.

The article focused on the potential of virtual care to fill the gaps left by provider and staffing shortages, and overcome barriers to access fueled by social determinants of health and other challenges.

“In the United States, access to pregnancy care is not equal and technology can help solve some of those challenges,” said Dr. Barker, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate.

Dr. Marko, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, spoke about how Babyscripts has freed up her capacity to see patients by delivering some aspects of care remotely.

Solutions can't come too soon for women who are facing barriers to better care, especially Black mothers and those on Medicaid, who are tragically the most frequent victims of the gaps in the current system. A feature from Rock Health highlights digital health's potential to support these vulnerable populations: Unwinding the opportunity: Medicaid’s digital health moment.
