Empowering Women: Blood Pressure Monitoring in Maternity Care

Written by The Babyscripts Team | February 26
On February 27, Anish Sebastian of Babyscripts will join a panel of maternal health experts for the March of Dimes webinar, Vital Signs, Vital Moments: The Power of Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring in Maternal Health. The discussion will focus on strategies to implement blood pressure management in maternal health populations and improve outcomes.

A key highlight of the webinar will be the introduction of the Mom and Baby Action Network’s (MBAN) Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) Toolkit, developed in collaboration with these experts and set to launch in February 2025.

Blood pressure-related complications, including preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), affect nearly 15% of pregnancies and pose significant risks to long-term cardiovascular health. While many women are educated about recognizable symptoms—such as persistent headaches or swelling—HDP can often develop without any outward warning signs. In these cases, blood pressure monitoring becomes the only way to detect complications early, particularly outside of a doctor’s office.

Ensuring that women have the knowledge and tools to monitor their own blood pressure is critical. When patients can track their readings, understand their significance, and communicate results to their care teams, it creates an opportunity for early intervention—helping to prevent severe complications and improve outcomes.

However, not all healthcare organizations have the same resources, workflows, or patient needs. That’s where the SMBP Toolkit comes in.

A Toolkit for Tailored SMBP Implementation

The MBAN SMBP Toolkit is designed to help healthcare providers, doulas, and maternal health advocates identify and implement SMBP solutions that fit their specific needs. The toolkit provides:

  • A breakdown of SMBP program models to fit different clinical settings and patient risk levels.
  • Case studies and best practices to guide adoption and integration.
  • Resources to support implementation and optimize workflows.

With this toolkit, organizations can explore multiple approaches to seamlessly integrate SMBP into prenatal and postpartum care—from basic self-tracking to more advanced, tech-enabled monitoring solutions.

How Babyscripts Supports SMBP Adoption

As a leader in remote maternal health monitoring, Babyscripts is committed to supporting SMBP adoption through flexible, scalable solutions tailored to different patient populations and healthcare settings.

For high-risk patients, Babyscripts offers myJourney Blood Pressure RPM—a remote monitoring program supported by a dedicated care management layer. Patients track their blood pressure at home using a cellular or internet-enabled cuff, with readings automatically recorded in the myJourney app and synced to their healthcare provider’s system. If a reading falls outside safe parameters, alerts notify the patient, care manager, and care team, enabling timely intervention.

For low-risk or normotensive patients, Babyscripts provides manual blood pressure tracking within the myJourney app, allowing for early engagement with SMBP and a seamless way to incorporate self-monitoring into routine maternal care.

Looking Ahead

The integration of self-measured blood pressure monitoring into maternal care is a critical step toward improving health outcomes and reducing maternal morbidity. As the MBAN SMBP Toolkit launches in 2025, organizations will have greater access to tailored strategies and resources to expand SMBP adoption. With solutions like Babyscripts’ myJourney Blood Pressure RPM, healthcare teams can provide personalized, proactive care that meets the needs of both high-risk and low-risk patients—empowering women to take charge of their health before, during, and after pregnancy.
